What is a game night?

A game night is an evening when people meet to play chess for fun. Some people call it club night. You play real people there, one game after another, and every new opponent shows you a new idea.

What happens there?

  • You pick someone to play, or a grown-up picks a player for you.
  • You play as many games as you like, and nobody writes the moves down. On most nights there is no clock.
  • New players and strong players share the same room, so if you know the rules, you are ready.
  • Some nights add a mini tournament or a fun new kind of chess.

You can come late and go home early. After 3 nights you start to know the other players, and that is how chess friends begin.

Who runs one, and how do you find it?

Chess clubs run game nights, and so do schools and libraries. Some cafes have a chess night too. To find one, ask at school or at the library, or ask a grown-up who plays. At some library nights you do not have to sign up first: you just walk in and play. If there is no game night near you, start one at home. Pick one night each week, put out the board and play your family. A game night at home counts too.

How you get the sticker

Show your grown-up or coach the 3 dates you wrote down. A photo from the night or the club calendar helps too. Your grown-up or coach checks it and hands you the sticker. If you have no club yet, then your grown-up at home checks your dates. Did you go to a game night before you had the passport? It still counts. Three wins in a row on one night also earn you the 3 Wins in a Row sticker.
