Junior Coach?

You have helped another player learn a topic and earn a sticker.

What does a junior coach do?

Your learner sets up the board and finds the move alone, because you taught them. Pick one skill you know well. Any skill sticker in the passport works, like stalemate, a fork or a discovered attack. You teach it to another player, at home, at school or at the club. You also learn the skill twice: once as a learner, and once as a teacher.

How to teach it

  • Show it with pieces on the board, not only with words.
  • Start easy, and make it a little harder each time.
  • Ask questions instead of giving the answer: "What happens if the rook goes there?"

Your job is done when your learner can do it without you.

Who can be your learner?

Anyone who plays chess can be your learner: a little brother or sister, a classmate or a clubmate. Your learner has a passport of their own, and their sticker goes in it. A younger learner is often easier to teach. Pick someone who knows less about the topic than you do.

Even champions have a coach

Magnus Carlsen's coach is Peter Heine Nielsen, a grandmaster from Denmark, who has coached Magnus since 2013. Keep going, and one day you can earn a coach title yourself. FIDE, the world chess federation, has five coach titles. The lowest one is for coaches who teach the very first steps. You are already doing what those coaches do.

How you get the sticker

There are two stickers here, and they come in order. First, your learner passes the topic's test on sjakkpass.com, or shows it to a coach. That earns their sticker, and then it is your turn. Your grown-up or coach checks it and hands you the sticker. Tell them who you taught, and what you taught them. If you have no club, a grown-up who watched you teach at home is enough. Did you teach someone before you had the passport? It still counts.
