You stopped Lars the zombie in a Battle.

Who is Lars?

Lars is the hungry zombie of the Star level, one of the toys who live in the Attic. You play chess against him on a screen. He shuffles across the board, looking for one of your pieces to bite. He walks straight at any piece he likes. Lars thinks only about food, not about plans or about his own king. You think about the whole board, and that is how you stop him.

Feed him nothing

After every move Lars makes, ask yourself which piece he wants to eat. Then use his hunger against him:

  • When he comes near one of your pieces, move it away, and he wastes his moves following it.
  • While he hunts, look for his pieces that nobody guards, and take them.
  • Bring out all your pieces, because he chews on one at a time while you use them all.
  • Then go for his king.

Game first, then Battle

Try your plan in a Game first, and watch which pieces he chases. A Game has three helpers: a hint, an undo, and a reroll. The reroll makes Lars take back his move and try a different one. When you are ready, start a Battle. A Battle has no helpers at all. Only a Battle counts for the sticker.

Play on until checkmate

Lars never gives up, and there is no clock, so there is only one way to win: checkmate. When he is losing, he says yes to a draw, so never offer him one. A draw is not a win. When you are far ahead, make sure he can still make a move. If he has no move and is not in check, that is stalemate, which is a draw.

How you get the sticker

Beat Lars in a Battle, and he gives you his mascot button. The button sits in his spot on your shelf in the Attic. The button proves you beat him. Show it to your grown-up or coach. They hand you the sticker for your passport. White or Black, both count. Lost? Good game, and try again as often as you like.
