You beat Felix the vampire in a Battle.

Who is Felix?

Felix is the worn-out vampire of the Titan level. He is one of the toys in the Attic, and you play chess against him on a screen. He is at his weakest when a game starts, because his strength comes from the pieces he captures. So he tempts you to trade pieces with him, again and again. If you say yes too often, he grows into a monster. To toast Felix means to beat him.

Game or Battle?

You can play Felix in two ways:

  • A Game has three helpers: a hint, an undo, and a reroll. The reroll makes Felix take his move back and try a different one.
  • A Battle has no helpers at all.
  • Only a Battle counts for the sticker.

Watch him grow stronger in a Game first, and then play a Battle.

Keep him weak

Feed him as little as you can:

  • Say no to trades you do not need. Every trade you skip is a meal he never gets.
  • Keep your pieces on guarded squares. A piece that nobody guards is the meal that feeds him fastest.
  • Bring your pieces out fast, and aim them at his king.
  • Hurry, and checkmate him before he grows too strong.

Taking pieces is not the same as winning. In 1851, Adolf Anderssen gave away a bishop, two rooks and his queen. His opponent took every one of them, but on move 23, Anderssen still gave checkmate.

Play all the way

Felix never gives up, and there is no clock, so there is only one way to win: checkmate. Felix says yes to a draw when he is losing, but a draw is not a win. So never offer him one, and play on until his king has no way out.

How you get the sticker

Beat Felix in a Battle, and he gives you his mascot button. The button goes in his slot on your shelf in the Attic. The button proves you beat him. Show it to your grown-up or coach. They hand you the sticker for your passport. White or Black, both count. If Felix won this time, it was still a good game. You can have a rematch as often as you like.
